Sherman Alexie’s modern masterpiece is a coming of age story not unlike Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye. Both feature protagonists struggling with decisions about their education and uncertain about their futures, both offer classic renditions of what Joseph Campbell calls “The Hero’s Journey.” Yet on its own, theĀ Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is also a very different book: a potent rumination on racism, class dispair, and ultimately, the triumph of hope.
